Planning the travel route. Gotta love Google

Our "planned route take us through Oklahoma City, Laredo TX, and finally San Miguel de Allende.

We will start by driving to Laredo Texas.  We will spend the night there so we can cross the border early in the morning.  The most dangerous/violent part of mexico is the first 150 miles along the border.  We plan to minimize our risk by travelling only during the day and travel through that part of Mexico early in the morning.

The Mexican portion of the driving route to SMA is mostly toll roads.  Mexico has developed an underused toll road network of very nice highways going through the interior of the country.  They are supposedly not very crowded because they are so expensive.  It will cost roughly $50 in tolls to travel the approx 500 miles.  Money well spent in my opinion.  They are well maintained, safe, and direct.  They are also patrolled by Angeles Verdes (green angels).  The Green Angels are basically a  AAA auto service provided for free by the Mexico department of tourism to encourage travel into the interior of the country.

We are travelling into unfamiliar territory.. Sort of.  We actually have pictures of the entire route courtesy of Google via Street View.

Here is where we get out tourist cards right across the border.

Does it still count as an adventure if you can do a virtual preview of your entire route from the sofa while watching Star Trek on TV?
